The UGLPOA Environmental Committee would like to gently remind residents of West Milford’s important ban on fertilizers containing phosphorus.
We also kindly request that residents refrain from cultivating plants or vegetables on docks or near the lake’s edge. Runoff from these areas can introduce phosphorus and nitrogen (common in plant fertilizers) into the lake.
These additional chemicals can disrupt the lake’s delicate ecosystem by:
- Altering the pH: This can harm aquatic life.
- Accelerating Eutrophication: This process reduces dissolved oxygen, endangering fish and other creatures.
- Fueling Algae Blooms: Excessive phosphorus promotes excessive algae growth, leading to decreased water clarity and impacting the lake’s overall health.
By following these simple guidelines, we can all contribute to maintaining the pristine beauty and ecological balance of Upper Greenwood Lake.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
